Sep 3rd, 2006, San Diego. Today at the Farmer's market in Hillcrest, Udai conducted a mini-fundraiser for the Bangalore-based NGO Jagruthi. We got a small donation spot right in the center of the market, where we laid down our chataai, spread out the bookmarks, cards and patches of handiwork made by Jagruthi kids, and put up a small sign saying "Support AIDS affected children in India by buying pieces of craft for $1 each".

The clients for his exquisite art has dried up. He cannot support his family of six. There are many other artists like Maguni who are forced to think of leaving their heritage. With Fair Trade, we can resurrect the art and give them joy and dignity.

Fortunately for them, they are not required to know why their mothers have left them here and what work they do (though a few might maintain suspicions about this); all they know and care about is that some time in the evening, they will get picked up and taken home. Throughout the day, their mentors will try to busy them in creative
